-20 + 60 = 60 + (-20) = 60 - 20 = 40

We can create addition sentences with one positive and one negative number resulting in a positive sum. For example, 8 + (-3) = 5 and 15 + (-4) = 11. Both examples clearly show how adding a negative number reduces the positive number but still keeps the total positive.
