The variable \( t \) represents the temperature at 3 p.m. Which equation would best model this word problem?

The temperature at the summit of Mt. Mitchell dropped 23°F between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. If the temperature at 9 p.m. was –10°F, what was the temperature at 3 p.m.?

A. \( t - 23 = -10 \)

B. \( 10 - 23 = t \)

C. \( 10 + 23 = t \)

D. \( 23 - t = -10 \)

**Please explain the answer.**

Answer (2)

If at 3 pm was t and dropped 23 degree, and then was -10 it for sure is answer A We can see it because first was t, then dropped 23 (subtract 27) and when it dropped we get -10 so t-23=-10

The best equation to model the problem is A: t − 23 = − 10 . This equation represents the temperature at 3 p.m. dropping by 23°F to reach -10°F at 9 p.m. Solving it shows that the temperature at 3 p.m. was 13°F.
