The study of the cell. Studies done by Schleiden, Schwann, and Virchow were made possible by the research of Hooke and Leeuwenhoek, and thanks to all of these peoples' contributions, the modern cell theory was born.

The modern cell theory was largely formed through the studies of Robert Hooke, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann, and Rudolf Virchow. Their collective work established that all living organisms are made of cells, that the cell is the basic unit of life, and that all cells arise from existing cells. These principles remain fundamental to biology today.
