The tail of a tadpole is lost during metamorphosis primarily through a process called apoptosis, which involves lysosomes releasing enzymes to digest the tail cells. This cellular breakdown is triggered by an increase in thyroid hormones during the transformation into a frog. Thus, lysosomes play a crucial role in this developmental process.
