Roosevelt and Churchill came to an agreement called the Destroyers for Bases Agreement. The agreement stated that the US would provide what now is considered "town-class" destroyers for land rights in the British Empire. The ships were named after towns that both the countries shared in name. The US provided 50 such ships for the land rights in Newfoundland, the Bahamas, Jamaica, St.Lucia, Trinidad, Antigua, and Guyana.

Roosevelt managed to give Churchill the destroyers he requested through the Destroyers for Bases Agreement in 1940, wherein the U.S. provided fifty destroyers to Britain in exchange for military base lease rights. This move not only bolstered Britain's Navy but also reflected a strategic shift in U.S. foreign policy toward supporting its allies during World War II. The agreement was a significant step away from isolationism, demonstrating Roosevelt's commitment to aiding countries fighting against Nazi aggression.
