The pleura is a membrane that surrounds the lungs, consisting of two layers: the visceral pleura that covers the lungs and the parietal pleura that lines the chest cavity. The space between these layers, called the pleural cavity, contains fluid that reduces friction during breathing. Inflammation of the pleura can lead to pleurisy, which is painful and can hinder lung function.
