The function of the medulla, or the medulla oblongata is to control all the involuntary movements in the body. This includes things both serious and not so serious things, ranging from controling our breath and heart blood pumping, to simpler yet important things like blinking. If we don't control it wilfully, it's done by the medulla.
The pons relays signals between different parts of the brain and regulates breathing, while the medulla is vital for controlling autonomic functions essential for survival, like heart rate and breathing. These functions make the medulla the most crucial part of the brain. Both structures play key roles in maintaining everyday life processes.
