Tim spends about \(\frac{1}{3}\) of each weekday sleeping and about \(\frac{7}{24}\) of each weekday in school.

What fraction of a weekday does Tim spend either sleeping or in school? Is this more or less than \(\frac{1}{2}\) a day? How much more or less?

If Tim spends a third of each weekday sleeping, this means he spends 8/24 hours a day asleep. If he spends 7/24 hours of each weekday in school too, this means the combined time he spends sleeping and in school is 8/24 + 7/24, so he spends 15/24 hours each weekday sleeping in school (three more hours than half a day)

Tim spends 24 15 of a weekday sleeping or in school, which is more than 2 1 a day. This means he spends an extra 8 1 of a day beyond half a day on those activities.
