The Quakers' land in New Jersey was sold to them by Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret, who had received the land from the Duke of York. The Quakers wanted to establish a community where they could practice their religion freely. ;

Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret sold land to the Quakers in New Jersey. Edward Byllynge, who was a Quaker, purchased Berkeley's interest in the land in 1674. In 1682, Carteret also sold his interest in East Jersey to several Quaker investors.
