The Society of Jesus, or Jesuits, was founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola on August 15, 1534, in Paris, France. The order was officially recognized by the Pope in 1540 and focused on education and the spread of Catholicism. Their mission included converting non-Christians and providing advice to Catholic rulers.
