NATO was formed in 1949 to provide collective defense against the Soviet threat, bringing together the United States and Western European nations. In response, the Soviet Union established the Warsaw Pact in 1955 to unify communist nations under a similar defense agreement. Together, these alliances marked the geopolitical division of Europe during the Cold War.
