Washington chose to leave the Presidency after two 4-year terms. This was very important to the future of the US Presidential position, as it kept future presidents from staying in office for longer than 8 years at a time (with limited exceptions). This kept one president from becoming too powerful and becoming a dictator of sorts. Hope this helps! :)
George Washington set significant precedents such as limiting presidential terms to two and establishing a cabinet of advisors. His Farewell Address emphasized national unity and warned against political factions and foreign alliances, ideals that guide modern presidents today. These precedents have shaped the presidency and American politics considerably since his time.
