How do fungi make people sick?

Fungi are recycling agents, helping to decompose dead material e.g. plants and animals, to put the nutrients back into the soil. Some fungi feed off living material, causing disease to plants (dutch elm disease in trees) and animals. Fungi can cause diseases such as; athlete's foot, thrush and ringworm. Fungi may sometimes cause serious infections in people who are especially susceptible to infections because their immune system is damaged. We also feel ill because of our body's response to infection.

Some fungi reproduce through tiny spores in the air. You can inhale the spores or they can land on you. As a result, fungal infections often start in the lungs or on the skin. You are more likely to get a fungal infection if you have a weakened immune system or take antibiotics. ;

Fungi can make people sick through parasitic infections, allergic reactions, and poisoning. Common human fungal infections include athlete's foot and thrush, and some fungi can cause severe allergic reactions. Those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for these infections.
