Jessica is getting ready for college. She needs to have an overall grade of 85 in her Math class to qualify for the college that she wishes to attend. Her math grade is based solely on her scores on 6 exams. On the first 5 exams, her scores were 87, 81, 85, 90, and 78.

Write an inequality that represents her predicament. What score does she need to get on her last test to qualify?

So,
Her average so far is the sum of the five scores divided by the number of tests she has taken so far.
(87 + 81 + 85 + 90 + 78)/5 = 84.2
(87 + 81 + 85 + 90 + 78)/5 < 85 :(
She will not get into that college if she doesn't increase her average on the last test.
85 - 84.2 = 0.8
0.8(5) = 4.0
On her last test, she needs to score 4 points higher than her current average in order to get into the college.
84.2 + 4 = 88.2
Jessica needs to score at least 88.2 on her last test.

Jessica needs to achieve a total of 510 points from her 6 exams to maintain an average of 85. She has already scored 421 points from her first five exams. Therefore, she needs to score at least 89 on her last test to qualify for her desired college.
