How are continents and tectonic plates related?

Asked by sylvia

Answer (2)

The continents are above the tectonic plates. Continents don't move; the tectonic plates do. So when they say the continents are moving, it's the tectonic plates shifting them around. Tectonic plates are also the cause of earthquakes. Whenever they shift, an earthquake occurs. There are over 600,000 earthquakes a year we can't feel, not including the ones we can feel.

Continents are located on tectonic plates, which are pieces of the Earth's crust that move over the semi-molten mantle. Their movement can cause earthquakes, volcanoes, and the formation of mountain ranges. Studying this relationship helps us understand geological processes and natural events.
