Why is cell size limited?

Asked by rach74187

Answer (2)

Cells are limited in size because the outside also known as the plasma membrane must transport food and oxygen to the inside of the cell. This can be represented by what is known as the surface to volume ratio.

Cell size is limited due to the relationship between surface area and volume, where larger cells become inefficient at transporting materials. As a cell grows, its surface area-to-volume ratio decreases, making it harder to exchange nutrients and waste. This limitation often results in cells dividing to maintain efficiency.
