Why were merchants able to make a profit on the Silk Road?

Merchants were able to make money by traveling further down the Silk Road. The farther away from home they went, the more there prices drove up because they did not have those things further East/West, and it became more of a risk when they traveled.

The further they went from their main land, the prices went up.

Merchants on the Silk Road were able to make a profit by trading luxury goods over long distances and capitalizing on high demand in foreign markets. The trade process involved multiple middlemen who each added a markup to the price, increasing overall profits. Despite the risks involved, the potential rewards encouraged merchants to participate in this expansive trade network.
