A virion is an individual viral particle that contains either DNA or RNA surrounded by a protein coat. It is the infectious form of a virus that exists outside a host cell, capable of infecting new cells once it finds a suitable host. Virions are much smaller than typical cells and have various shapes, which help them in the infection process.
