Russian immigration came in three waves. The first wave came in the early 1800's was for hunting and trading. Back in Russia the people were starving, living in deplorable conditions and hoping to do better inAmerica.

Their migration was motivated by the promising resources of California and the geopolitical interests of the Russian Empire. The desire to establish a cultural presence in new territories also played a role in their settlement efforts.
