Russian settlers came to California in the early 1800s mainly to escape economic hardship in Russia, seeking better opportunities in hunting and trading. Their migration was motivated by the promising resources of California and the geopolitical interests of the Russian Empire. The desire to establish a cultural presence in new territories also played a role in their settlement efforts.
