Heating zinc sulfide in air causes the formation of zinc oxide and sulfur dioxide. The reaction can be expressed as 2 ZnS + 3 O 2 ​ → 2 ZnO + 2 SO 2 ​ . This process is critical in zinc extraction from ores.
