One light year is about 9 trillion kilometers. Arcturus is a star that is 37 light years from Earth. If you are about 11 years old now, how old will you be when light that is leaving Arcturus today reaches Earth?

To answer this question, you don't need to know the distance in one light year. You only need to know that it represents a year of travel.
The light leaving Arcturus today will take 37 years to reach Earth. If you are 11 now, then you will see that light (if you look at Arcturus) when you are 48 years old.
It's enough to blow your mind. If Arcturus blew up yesterday, you won't know it until you're 48 !

You will be 48 years old when the light that left Arcturus today reaches Earth. Since Arcturus is 37 light years away, it takes that long for the light to travel to us. Therefore, adding 37 years to your current age of 11 gives you 48 years old.
