Electrons are transferred. The object that loses some becomes positively charged. The object that gains some becomes negatively charged.

When an object is charged, electrons, which are negatively charged subatomic particles, are transferred between objects. This transfer causes one object to become positively charged by losing electrons, while the other becomes negatively charged by gaining them. Only electrons are involved in this transfer since protons are fixed in the nuclei of atoms and cannot move freely.
