The most serious problem faced by settlers in Virginia was the severe food shortage, especially during the winter of 1609-1610. This led to starvation, disease, and conflicts with Native Americans, further complicating their survival. Leadership challenges and lack of labor also contributed to the settlers' struggles during the colony's early years.
