Ellis Island is located right off of New York and is where the immigrants came in from other countries. It was where they were tested and made citizens if they passed the tests. Because it was so close to New York (and therefore close to New Jersey too), the many immigrants from all over the world chose to settle there.
New York and New Jersey's diverse populations stem from significant immigration through Ellis Island, especially between 1870 and 1900. Many immigrants sought better opportunities and settled in neighborhoods where they could maintain their cultural practices. As a result, these states became cultural melting pots, reflecting various backgrounds and traditions.
