Was the Gold Rush a good or bad thing for the United States?

Good because it made the United States expand westward, following Manifest Destiny, and made the economy prosper. The miners moved west creating boomtowns, and although many people did not succeed in their quest for gold, it was good for the economy.

The Gold Rush of 1848 contributed significantly to the economic growth and territorial expansion of the United States, fulfilling the ideals of Manifest Destiny. However, it also resulted in the displacement and suffering of Native American tribes, increased crime, and social challenges in newly formed communities. Therefore, it can be viewed as both a beneficial and detrimental event in U.S. history.
