Henry Hudson was an English explorer who, in 1609, was hired by the Dutch East India Company to find the Northwest Passage to Asia. During his expedition, he explored the Hudson River and New York Harbor, claiming these areas for the Netherlands and opening pathways for the fur trade. Although he did not find the passage, his voyages were instrumental in establishing Dutch presence and commerce in North America.
