Elias conducted an experiment about the effects of exercise on the heart rate of teenagers. Before morning basketball practice, he asked the members of his high school team to be his subjects. He measured each of their heart rates before and after a set of exercises.

Which change would most reduce the bias of his experimental design?

Well obviously he would need to make sure that the exercise is very well controlled. But I think the most important aspect he needs to change is the people. Firstly, the subjects are all boys. They are also all obviously already quite fit (because they are in a sports team), and they are all around the same age. Results could vary if the sex, fitness and age of people also differs. It is therefore important to record results from a wide range of people.

The correct answer is:
He needs to select a more representative sample.
Explanation :
Choosing students from the basketball team for the sample he uses on a study of heart rates and exercise will be a biased sample. This is because students on the basketball team are potentially healthier than other students, which means that exercise will not have a large an effect on their heart rate as it would if they were not as healthy and not as physically fit.
In order to reduce the amount of bias, he should choose students from different groups throughout the school.

To reduce bias in his experiment, Elias should select a more representative sample of teenagers from various backgrounds and activity levels, not just basketball players. This would ensure that the results are more reflective of the overall teenage population regarding exercise and heart rates. A diverse sample would improve the accuracy and reliability of the study's conclusions.
