Conduction is usually faster in liquids and certain solids than in gases. Materials that are good conductors of thermal energy are called thermal conductors. Metals are excellent thermal conductors.
Two materials that are good thermal conductors are copper and aluminum. Conversely, two materials that act as good insulators, which means they are poor heat conductors, are wood and plastic. This occurs because materials like metals have large numbers of free electrons which can carry thermal energy efficiently, leading to faster heat conduction. Insulating materials lack these free electrons and thus conduct heat much slower.
The rate of heat transfer through conduction also depends on factors such as the temperature difference between objects and the cross-sectional area of the material through which heat is being transferred. For instance, touching a cold wall with your palm results in a quicker cooling sensation than touching it with a fingertip due to the larger contact area.

Conduction occurs faster in liquids and solids than in gases, with metals being excellent thermal conductors. Insulators like wood and plastic, in contrast, are poor thermal conductors. The effectiveness of a material in conducting heat influences how we perceive temperature differences when touching different substances.
