The primary metric unit for reporting mass is the kilogram (kg), which is part of the International System of Units (SI). One kilogram is equivalent to 1,000 grams and is defined by a platinum-iridium cylinder. Understanding the distinction between mass and weight is essential, as mass measures the amount of matter, while weight is the force due to gravity on that mass.
